Suspect arrested and charged in unsolved Renee Sweeney murder

Greater Sudbury Police Service called a media conference late Tuesday afternoon and say there has been a significant development in the unsolved murder of Renee Sweeney from 1998.

Police say 39-year-old Robert Steven Wright, of North Bay, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death of Renee Sweeney at a Paris Street video store in 1998.

Sweeney was brutally attacked at her place of work and sustained multiple stab wounds, succumbing to her injuries at the scene.

Wright will appear in bail court Wednesday in Sudbury.

He has no prior criminal record.

Over the past two decades, GSPS has made many public appeals and has received over 2,000 tips in this case.

Wright, known as Steve, was an 18-year-old Sudbury resident attending Lockerby Composite School at the time of the crime.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information related to this incident or the individual mentioned above is asked to contact Detectives in the Criminal Investigations Division at 705-675-9171 extension 2230.
